What is Cranial Osteopathy ?

Cranial Osteopathy is a very subtle treatment using very gentle manipulative pressure. It is used to encourage the release of stresses throughout the body. Cranial Osteopathy is often associated with the treatment of babies and young children but it can be very useful in treating adults too. It can be effective in treating a wide range of conditions in people from birth to old age.Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel the very subtle rhythmical shape change that is present in all body tissues. This is known as involuntary motion. Dr William Sutherland first described this in the early 1900's and a series of laboratory tests in the 1970's confirmed its existence. Osteopaths vary their treatment method depending on their own preference and also the presenting problem of each individual patient. A "Cranial Osteopath"  uses very gentle treatment technique in practice. In order to practice cranial osteopathy my training has involved post graduate courses with the Sutherland Cranial College .

Osteopathy for children and babies

Osteopathy and Cranial Osteopathy can be an effective treatment approach for all ages. Osteopaths treat children and babies for a variety of common complaints. A baby's skull is made up of a number of bones that can overlap and move to adapt to the force of birth. The birth process is one of the most stressful events of our lives! Enormous forces are generated as the uterus pushes to expel the baby. Many babies cope well with this compression and are contented from the onset of life outside the womb. Sometimes however with a long labour, forceps delivery or a complicated birth the baby's head does not fully recover from the compression and distortion. This can lead to problems including

•    Disturbed Sleep

•    Colic and Wind

•    Feeding Difficulties

•    Crying and irritability

•    General unease
